The Holmes Road bridge east of Reynolds Road is open again after 17 months. The town paid $438,281 for a new deck instead of a replacement that could top $3 million.

The Holmes Road bridge east of Reynolds Road is open again. The Town of Collierville reopened it Monday, Oct. 19, about 17 months after it closed.

The bridge had been shut since May 9, 2025. The town said a Tennessee Department of Transportation inspection found significant deterioration of structural components, and TDOT told the town to close it for public safety. The details are in the town’s release on the reopening.

What the town did

An engineering assessment found the deck and the supporting superstructure had deteriorated. The piles underneath were still in good condition.

So the town replaced the deck with precast concrete slabs instead of building a new bridge. The release said it is the first time the town has used that method to rehabilitate a bridge. Town Engineer Dale Perryman guided the choice, the town said.

The project in numbers:

  • Cost: $438,281.36, paid from the town’s general fund
  • Full replacement: could have cost more than $3 million, the town said
  • Extra life: about 15 to 20 years, according to the project’s engineering assessment
  • Contract approved: April 27, 2026, by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen
  • Construction: began June 15 and finished on schedule

The town said the repair lets it plan and budget for a full replacement as the bridge nears the end of its extended life. It also said the work supports long-term planning for the area, including a possible future widening of Holmes Road.

“Maintaining our infrastructure is an important investment in Collierville’s future,” Mayor Maureen Fraser said in the release.

What it means for you

  • The detour is over. During the closure, drivers had to go around by Fleming Road, Shelby Drive and Reynolds Road. The town said that added about two miles to a trip.
  • Expect a little cleanup. The town said minor site cleanup may continue but is not expected to affect use of the bridge.
  • All inspections are done. The release said every required inspection and approval was completed before the reopening.

TDOT inspects bridges on a three-year cycle, the town said, and those inspections guide repair and replacement decisions.
