Eight of Collierville's nine public schools earned the Governor's Civics Seal for 2025-26, making the district one of eight named for civics statewide. Germantown and Arlington are too.

Collierville Schools is one of eight districts in Tennessee named a Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education District. Eight of its nine schools earned the Governor’s Civics Seal for the 2025-26 school year.

The district announced the recognition on its website on Oct. 9. The Tennessee Department of Education’s list of 2025-26 designations names 142 schools and eight districts statewide.

What a school has to do

Gov. Bill Lee announced the seal in his first State of the State address on March 4, 2019, the district said. The General Assembly then wrote it into state law.

To earn the seal, a school must meet these criteria, according to the district’s announcement:

  • teach civics across a broad range of grades and subjects, building on Tennessee’s academic standards
  • teach the nation’s democratic principles, the people and events behind its founding documents, and how the U.S. and Tennessee governments were formed
  • offer teacher training or student resources that support civics
  • give students real-world learning activities
  • fully carry out a project-based civics assessment required by state law
  • be recognized as a civics all-star school, where that applies

Each school that earns the seal is listed on the Tennessee State Report Card as a Tennessee Excellence in Civics Education School.
