Next pause: no in-person tag renewals or registrations at any Shelby County Clerk office Wednesday, Nov. 18. All 12 monthly dates through September 2027, and how to renew online.
Updated Oct. 22: The first pause on Wednesday, Oct. 21, has passed and in-person motor vehicle services were scheduled to resume Thursday, Oct. 22. The next pause is Wednesday, Nov. 18. The clerk’s office had not announced any further service changes as of Oct. 22.
Collierville drivers who planned to renew a car tag in person on a third Wednesday should pick another day. The Shelby County Clerk’s Office paused in-person motor vehicle renewals and registrations at all of its locations on Wednesday, Oct. 21, and plans to do the same on the third Wednesday of each month.
The office said in a release posted Oct. 15 that staff would use the day to process pending transactions, complete training and work on what it called operational priorities. In-person motor vehicle services are expected to resume Thursday, Oct. 22.
It is the first of 12 planned monthly pauses aimed at the office’s backlog.
What stays open on pause days
The release said other clerk services are expected to continue during normal hours, subject to final staffing and location plans. Those include:
- driver’s license services
- marriage licenses
- business services
- notary services
The office said any additional service changes would be announced before Oct. 21. None had been posted by Oct. 22.
Renewing without a trip
Online renewals and the downtown renewal kiosk may remain available for eligible transactions while systems are working, the release said. Online renewal is on the Tennessee county clerk renewal site for Shelby County.
Anyone using the kiosk must bring the renewal card and a credit or debit card.
The pause repeats every month
The office plans to hold what it calls Service & Improvement Days on the third Wednesday of each month. It said that is the day with the lowest customer traffic.
The release said the days will let the motor vehicle renewal and registration team work through the backlog. They will also be used for training, updated procedures, new technology and stronger financial controls.
The planned dates are:
| 2026 | 2027 |
|---|---|
| Wednesday, Oct. 21 | Wednesday, Jan. 20 |
| Wednesday, Nov. 18 | Wednesday, Feb. 17 |

“Our residents deserve timely, accurate and respectful service,” Shelby County Clerk LaSonya Hall said in the release. “We are using dedicated improvement days to make measurable progress on pending work while building a more reliable system for the people of Shelby County.”
The release did not say how many transactions are pending.
